The ear is subdivided into the outer, middle and inner ear. The outer ear comprises the auricle, the auditory canal and the eardrum. In the middle ear can be found three tiny bones (the hammer, anvil and stirrup), which connect the eardrum inwardly. They are located in an air-filled chamber having a pressure-equalizing effect and leading to the mouth. In the inner ear lies the actual organ of hearing with the semicircular canal and the cochlea. Here we find fluid as well as over 20,000 tiny hairs comparable to nerve cells. These transmit and amplify vibrations, which are passed on as electrical impulses to the brain. Here is also to be found the organ of equilibrium, which has no direct influence on the sense of hearing.
